Today I thought I’d share one facet of my journey towards a more natural and non-toxic way of life: my current makeup routine. As I’ve discussed before (here and here), I’ve been ridding my environment of all types of yucky chemicals throughout the past couple of years. While I was pretty quick to transition to non-toxic cleaning and other home care products (like the shower cleaner and all-purpose cleaning spray I make myself), my skincare and makeup routines have taken a bit more time. There’s been lots of trial and error in finding what works and what doesn’t. I mean, natural deodorant is a nice idea but only if you don’t stink by 10am! (Btw, I love this one just in case you were wondering.)
Above is all of the makeup I currently use on a daily basis. As you’ll notice, there’s a mix of non-toxic and conventional products. Like I said, it’s a work in progress! I can’t stand the thought of throwing out perfectly good makeup that I paid for (totally wasteful!), so as I run out of each product I’ve been replacing it with a more natural version.

In terms of natural products, I’ve been loving my RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up. While it’s a bit pricey for what appears to be such a small amount, it stretches a loooong way! I only need a tiny dab to cover up my dark circles, blemishes and any redness around my nose and chin. I’ve had this pot for about 6 months and I’ve barely made a dent in it! In my opinion, it’s totally worth the investment.
I’m also a big fan of bareMinerals. I’ll admit, I didn’t really like it at first though. I thought it had no coverage and a tendency to cake the more I put on. As it turns out, I was just applying it wrong! After watching a couple tutorials, I learned that you really do have to start with a teeny-tiny amount on your brush and “buff” it into your skin. I’ve found that it has nice, buildable coverage that stays put all day if I apply it this way! It does take a bit more time to apply correctly, but once you get into a routine you’ll hardly notice.
While I love lipstick, I personally find it too fussy for everyday wear. Normally I just swipe on some lip balm instead. My sister got me this one from 100% PURE for Christmas and I’ve been loving it! It’s the only lip balm I’ve tried that actually keeps my lips moisturized without setting off my morning sickness. It has a subtle glossiness and light peppermint scent.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had any luck with natural non-toxic makeup in the eye department. Nothing I’ve tried stays put! Since raccoon eyes aren’t part of the look I’m going for, I’ve stuck to drugstore products for the time being. Does anyone have any recommendations in this area? I’m in the market for non-toxic primer, mascara and eyeliner that’s decently affordable. Bonus points if it’s waterproof/water-resistant!
P.S.- What does your natural non-toxic makeup routine look like? Any must-try brands or products? I’d love to test them out!
